The AS/NZS 3760 is an electrical testing standard. It implies, “In-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment“.
AS/NZS 3760 sets out safety inspection and testing procedures. These procedures help satisfy the (OHS) safety obligations for people using portable electrical appliances in the workplace.
It is the Standard used as the prime reference document for performing test and tagging on portable electrical appliances.
The Standard itself is not legislation (law) or a regulation. Therefore, it does not mandate anything. However it is broadly recognised as a credible document by most industries, unions and Government safety authorities. It is generally adopted as a best practice.
Many Standards, Industry Codes, Codes of Practice, etc. reference AS/NZS 3760.
As a “living document”, it is updated from time to time. The current version is 3760:2010.
The aim of the Standard is to provide readers with an inspection and testing regime. This helps ensure that testing procedures can be performed by a person who does not necessarily have formal qualifications or registration, with the use of simple instrumentation.
It is important that any person performing test and tagging should have read and understood the requirements of AS/NZS 3760. This is usually done in conjunction with an appliance testing training course.
