Learn How To Test Residual Current Devices to AS/NZS 3760

Residual current device (RCDs) are also known as Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers, Residual Current Circuit Breakers and Safety Switches.

RCDs are important safety devices. They are widely recognised as being highly effective in preventing injuries and fatalities that can result from electric shock incidents. However, they are frequently overlooked when testing and tagging programs are being developed. This is often due to the mistaken belief current overload devices, such as fuses and circuit breakers, perform the same safety function.

Including residual current device testing in your testing and tagging skill set not only adds value to what you do but further enhances your ability to improve workplace safety.

This online course covers several approved methods you can use to inspect and test RCDs according to the requirements of AS/NZS 3760.

Some Quick FAQs About This Course

No. We are not an RTO or provide Nationally Accredited courses.

There are a number of reasons we decided not to provide NA courses;

  1. To do testing and tagging in Victoria (where we operate from) the requirement is you must be a competent person with no requirement to undertake a nationally accredited course.  This does vary between the States / Territories. (more info about requirements in your jurisdiction)
  2. The current nationally accredited course only covers the minimum knowledge and skill sets. For most students this leaves them with big gaps in their skills once they leave the comfort of the classroom and enter the real world.
  3. Not being constrained by the strict content limitations of the Nationally Accredited course we have been able to write a course that covers everything in the nationally accredited course plus more.

This cover covers the testing of RCDs in accordance with AS/NZS 3760

  1. What are RCDs (portable and fixed)
  2. Overview of how RCDs work
  3. Testing of RCDs
  4. Outcome from testing

On some sites a temporary power supply may be present which is protected with RCDs – for example many construction sites. This course provides the skill set required to correctly test these RCDs however some sites and jurisdictions may require this to only be performed by persons holding an electrical license such as electricians, electrical inspectors etc.

This course does not cover RCDs used in medical applications or installations.

This course does not cover the testing of 3 phase RCDs however the process is very similar but requires test equipment suitable for 3 phase RCDs.

To undertake the course you will need access to:

  • A computer / laptop
  • A reliable internet connection
  • Access to a copy of AS/NZS 3760 *

*  AS/NZS 3760 is an important document and will be referenced during the course. If you do not have access to a copy you can purchase one from Sai Global or Standards New Zealand  or try a google search for other possible download sites. We strongly recommend you obtain your own copy as it is very likely you will need to refer to it from time to time after you have completed the course.

To practice and perform the practical aspects of this course, you will need;

  • Option 1) An automated PAT with RCD testing function
  • Option 2) A dedicated RCD testing unit
  • Access to portable and fixed RCDs
  • Be a competent person in accordance AS/NZS 3760 requirements

Note: The RCD test equipment you use must be compliant with the requirements set out in AS/NZS 3760

This online course is self-paced and does not have a start date. Once your registration is completed you can log in and get started immediately.

You go at your own pace in your own time. As a general guide, most students take about 90 minutes to complete.

testing tagging online john image

Due to his extensive and broad experience that began during 2004, John is recognised as an expert in the test and tag industry. His experience began when he was a member of his local VicSES (Victorian State Emergency Service) unit and was responsible for maintaining their response equipment. As you can imagine, the reliability of emergency safety equipment is vital and John learned a lot about appliance testing as part of this role.

During 2007 John founded ACME Test and Tagging to provide test and tag services to workplaces across the Greater Melbourne area. Starting from scratch with no leads, no clients and no revenue, he quickly built a thriving business mainly due to his dedication to the core values of being fair, friendly and reliable.

Since starting the training programs during 2015 John has helped hundreds of people become test and tag certified. Now you can complete his online test and tag course, anywhere across Australia.
